Riphean is the name of a geological period that lasted from about 1.65 billion to 600 million years ago. During that time, powerful tectonic processes were shaping the territory of what is now Russia and Northern Eurasia, forming vast sedimentary basins and crystalline shields.
There's also a second meaning: the mythical Riphean Mountains, imagined by ancient Greek and Roman geographers as a cold, distant range at the edge of the world — the source of the north wind and great rivers.
Tectonic forces forged shields and basins that cradle today's marble reserves.
Classical geographers placed them at the world's edge, source of auroral winds and legendary rivers.
